Estudiantes have announced that 20-year-old midfielder, Joaquín Correa has signed for Serie A side, Sampdoria for a fee of around $10 million. Manchester City were reportedly close to agreeing a deal for the highly rated youngster but the Blucerchiati have stolen a march on several European sides. The amount is too much for Estudiantes to turn down and gives Correa a chance to follow in the footsteps of Estudiantes President, Juan Sebastián Verón, who played for Sampdoria between 1996 and 1998.
The Italian club will pay 50% of the fee up front to complete the deal with the remainder to be paid in installments over the next couple of seasons.
The 20-year-old established himself as one of Estudiantes’ key players and given his potential, it is little surprise that so many European clubs had taken an interest.
The attacking midfield player has the ability to glide past defenders and possesses an excellent right foot, which is capable of scoring from distance, which he provided a wonderful example of when he thundered in an absolute rocket against Peñarol in this year’s Copa Sudamericana.
