Gabriel Milito’s Independiente scored an impressive victory away to Lanús on Thursday evening in their Copa Sudamericana first leg and following a similar blueprint, El Rojo earned an opening weekend Primera victory against Belgrano in Córdoba.

Emiliano Rigoni was decisive against Lanús and on his old stomping ground the 22-year-old proved to be the match winner once more. Chasing onto a ball over the top by Leandro Fernández, Rigoni caught Juan Carlos Olave off guard with a quickly struck volley. Both sides had chances as the game wore on but Independiente held on for a valuable opening three points.

In Santa Fe, Unión successfully put some more distance between themselves and the other clubs at the foot of the descenso with victory over Olimpo. Former Atlético Rafaela striker, Federico Anselmo struck the only goal of the game after 20 minutes with a smart low shot from just outside the penalty area. Olimpo failed to create enough chances, as has been a recurrent problem for Cristian Diaz’s side, on their way to opening weekend defeat.

Belgrano  0 – 1  Independiente

Unión  1 – 0  Olimpo
