Colón thump Sarmiento to continue winning streak & Banfield win in Tigre (VIDEO)

A seventh consecutive win, only one goal conceded in that time and now third in the table, Colón have emerged as the most unlikely of title challengers after a 4-0 win over Sarmiento on Saturday.

First and foremost Eduardo Domínguez’s side are a well-drilled defensive unit but the addition of Diego Vera in January has provided a little more cutting edge in attack and after 22 minutes, the Uruguayan fired in from outside the penalty area.

Sarmiento matched their visitors for much of the game but shortly after falling behind, El Verde were punished further when an incisive move down the left resulted in Facundo Pereyra tapping in and double the lead.

The home side are looking as good as relegated already and in the closing stages appeared to almost give up, allowing substitute Ismael Blanco to add a relatively simple brace.

In Victoria, Tigre’s dreadful form continued as Banfield left with all three points after Nicolás Bertolo’s first half goal gave El Taladro a deserved win.

The visitors had already threatened before Bertolo smashed in the opening goal at the back post just before the break but the game’s main talking point came during the second half.

Brian Sarmiento earned a scolding from Julio César Falcioni after wasting a chance from the penalty spot – the 27-year-old’s panenka came back off the crossbar and his header into the net was correctly disallowed.

Sarmiento  0 – 4  Colón

Tigre  0 – 1  Banfield
