There haven’t been many matches this season in which Vélez would be considered favourites but against Belgrano, the lowest scoring team in the league, Omar de Felippe’s side were expexted to win. However, second half goals from Cristian Lema and Federico Lértora earned El Pirata a rare win.
After a goalless first half, Lema headed in from a corner shortly after half time and Lértora slotted in a second on the counter, only the third time that Sebastián Méndez’s side have scored more than once this season.
Lema was sent off for a second yellow card soon after and Mariano Pavone pulled a goal back late on but the veteran striker perhaps should have snatched an equaliser when he opportunistically pounced on Lucas Acosta’s relaxed goalkeeping only to miss the target.
Earlier in the Estadio Florencio Sola, Banfield picked up a 2-0 win over Sarmiento thanks to two Darío Cvitanich penalties. There was little argument over the first for a foul on Nicolás Bertolo but the second sparked a furious response from the visitors as the assistant spotted the slightest of tugs. Cvitanich put both away expertly but the result leaves El Verde bottom of the descenso and looking certainties for the drop.
