A day after Tigre fell to lower league opposition on penalties, Quilmes followed as Federal A club, Gimnasia y Esgrima de Mendoza stunned their Primera opponents from the spot after a goalless draw in Temperley.
Having lost eleven of their last thirteen league matches, Quilmes are hardly the strongest of Primera opponents but were still expected to have more than enough to see off a side battling for promotion to the Nacional B.
However, a woefully disjointed performance failed to really stretch Gimnasia and the goalless draw was warranted. If Quilmes’ display over 90 minutes was poor, their penalties were equally bad and having missed three of their four, it was left to Pablo Palacios Alvarenga to send the underdogs through 4-1.
Talleres or Defensores de Belgrano await in the last 32.
