Inter’s sensational start to the Serie A season continued on Sunday afternoon as captain Mauro Icardi scored to become on of the top ten goal scorers in the club’s history as the Nerazzurri went top with a 5-0 win over Chievo.
Icardi scored the second shortly before half time to take his season tally to 16 in 15 matches but his 94th goal for Inter also took him into the record books.
“I have no words to describe this moment,” Icardi wrote on his Instagram account after the victory.
“It’s a beautiful moment that represents hard work and sacrifice over all these years at Inter. Today, in my fifth season in Milan, I have entered the history of this club as one of the top ten scorers of all time.
“Thanks to all of you for the support you give me every day.”
Still only 24, Icardi is proving himself regularly as one of Europe’s top strikers and his number of critics diminishes with each passing accomplishment.
Elsewhere in Italy, Giovanni Simeone notched his fifth goal of the season after a difficult start to life in Florence. The 22-year-old’s powerful header set Fiorentina on the way to a 3-0 win over Sassuolo and after a string of disappointing results lifted the Viola back up into seventh.
Manchester City’s incredible run continued on Sunday with another late win to re-establish an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League and extend their winning streak to a record-equalling 13 games.
Once again Nicolás Otamendi was vital and aside from his outstanding defensive display, the Argentina centre back popped up with the crucial equaliser after West Ham had taken a surprise lead.
Nicolas Otamendi equalises for Manchester City and scores for the fourth time this season in all competitions. That’s double what he managed across his previous two campaigns for the club
