They may have just celebrated their best ever league finish but Godoy Cruz were not exempt from this year’s Copa Argentina upsets as recent Primera C champions Defensores Unidos sprung a surprise victory in Santa Fe.
The Superliga runners-up had rattled the crossbar in search of the opening goal but found themselves behind after half an hour when Emanuel Cáceres headed in from a left wing cross.
A fine stop denied Santiago García and a miraculous goalline clearance stopped Victorio Ramis from equalising but eventually Godoy Cruz did find their goal. A long clearance upfield found Ramis unmarked and the forward lobbed the ball over Juan Figueroa into the net.
Neither side could find a winner and so with another Superliga club forced to penalties another upset became reality. Gabriel Avalos saw his effort saved by Figueroa and Sebastián Contreras kept his cool to deliver the knockout blow with a panenka.
The Primera B newcomers will now take on Newell’s Old Boys in the last 32.
