Boca Juniors go top with win over Estudiantes & Lanús comeback to claim point from Independiente (VIDEO)

Unlikely to win any prizes for being the most exciting team to watch, Boca Juniors won’t care one bit after a 1-0 win over Estudiantes at La Bombonera sent Gustavo Alfaro’s side top of the Superliga.

Just as they did against Patronato and Banfield, an early goal was enough for Boca and while they could have perhaps added more a defence which is yet to concede this season ensured victory.

The only goal came after three minutes when Estudiantes goalkeeper Mariano Andújar failed to hold Alexis Mac Allister’s shot and Emanuel Reynoso pounced on the rebound.

For all of Boca’s defensive solidity Estudiantes should have been level soon after at a corner, only for Federico González to completely mis-hit with the goal gaping.

The visitors saw plenty of the ball but it was Boca that carried the greater goal threat with Sebastián Villa’s pace causing problems and Mac Allister again forcing Andújar into action.

The Estudiantes keeper would continue to be busy during the second half but his side came close to snatching an equaliser once again. Substitute Mateo Retegui, on loan from Boca, clipped the ball over Esteban Andrada and as it was drifting toward the net, former Boca reserves teammate Marcelo Weigandt got back to head to safety.

Boca brought on a young centre forward of their own late on but Jan Hurtado, who has so far struggled since his move from Gimnasia, failed with one glorious chance and fired another just wide from outside the box.

Despite scoring less than half the amount of goals of rivals River, it is Boca who now sit top of the table. Focus remains on the Copa Libertadores but if Boca can continue not conceding goals and carry this form through until cup commitments are over, then the Xeneizes reclaiming the title looks a distinct possibility.

Independiente would love to have that problem but El Rojo’s defensive fragility allowed Lanús to come from two-down in Avellaneda to claim a point.

Sebastián Beccacece is coming under increasing pressure after failing to establish any kind of system or first choice eleven since replacing Ariel Holan but the 38-year-old may well have felt his side should still have had enough to see off Lanús.

Silvio Romero poked Independiente in front during a superior first half display and when the former Lanús striker clipped in a superb second just after the break, El Rojo appeared to heading to victory.

However, Lanús immediately pulled one back with Lautaro Valenti striking a free-kick low through a crowded box and past Martín Campaña and minutes later the visitors were level. Independiente failed to defend a corner and as the ball bobbled through to José Sand, the veteran centre forward did what he knows best in finding the net.

And it was the visitors who came closest to winning it. Independiente supporters became frustrated particularly with Alexander Barboza and Lanús piled on the pressure. Juan Sánchez Miño cleared off the line and Campaña tipped a Sand effort onto the post as El Rojo held on.

A point was the least that Lanús deserved but it was whistles that rang around the Libertadores de América that told the story. Independiente look worryingly without direction and for a club lacking in patience, Beccacece must find answers soon.
