This week’s midweek football brought us some very surprising results (aside from Barcelona and Real Madrid getting turned over in the Champions League) both domestically and in the Copa Libertadores. Fresh from their defeat to the same opponents in the league, Velez Sarsfield travelled to Rosario to face Newell’s Old Boys in the first leg of their Copa Libertadores last 16 clash. The hosts welcomed star striker, Nacho Scocco back into the lineup after his brief injury layoff but he could do nothing as Velez came away with, what could be, a crucial 1 – 0 win. In the Copa Argentina, two of the Buenos Aires giants were humbled by lower league opposition. River Plate and Racing both on the end of humiliating 1 – 0 defeats at the hands of Estudiantes de Buenos Aires and Tristan Suarez! REPORTS AND GOALS HERE….
NEWELL’S OLD BOYS 0 – 1 VELEZ SARSFIELD
Perhaps Velez’s greater Libertadores experience was the telling factor but they left Rosario with a great win and the all important away goal. The goal came midway through the second half, a well placed finish from Agustin Allione and leaves Newell’s with a difficult task when they come to Liniers. Velez did have defender, Fabian Cubero sent off late on but it couldn’t spoil what was a wonderful result.
RACING 0 – 1 TRISTAN SUAREZ
Racing manager, Luis Zubeldia asked for “forgiveness from the world of Racing” as he saw his side beaten at home by a side from Argentina’s third tier. Tristan Suarez play in the Primera B Metropolitana but their committed performance resulted in a famous victory in one of Buenos Aires’s great stadiums. Federico Barrionuevo, the hero as his long range strike found the back of the net to give them the win. Racing had Mario Bolatti sent off just after half time and late on as frustrations boiled over Mauro Camoranesi was also given his marching orders. A terrible night for Racing but a great story for the cup and a memorable night for Tristan Suarez.
RIVER PLATE 0 – 1 ESTUDIANTES DE BUENOS AIRES
A good night for the Primera B Metropolitana was made even better later when goliath, River Plate was defeated by lowly Estudiantes de Buenos Aires. Needless to say the club’s fans are up in arms over the defeat to such opposition and Ramon Diaz has had to explain that they didn’t underestimate Estudiantes, it was a mistake and they will continue to fight for the championship. Certainly, that is one way of gaining forgiveness but there is still a lot of work to be done if they are to triumph in the league.
