Riquelme back in action for Boca but couldn’t inspire them to another famous Libertadores game

La Bombonera was packed to the rafters for this Copa Libertadores Quarter Final first leg and despite not witnessing any goals it was still a pretty exciting affair. Both sides created some good chances but neither could make the break through and so the second leg in Rosario next Wednesday is a winner takes all game. Boca had the better of this game and dominated possession but failed to take advantage. However, they now know that any score draw in Rosario will be enough to book their place in the semi final. The best chance of the game fell to Walter Erviti in the first half but his toe poked finish was unlucky to hit the knees of onrushing Newell’s keeper, Nahuel Guzman and roll out for a corner. Newell’s danger man, Nacho Scocco drew a smart save from Agustin Orion in the second half with a spectacular volley but in truth a goal for the away side would not have been deserved. In injury time, Guillermo Burdisso was shown a second yellow card, albeit rather harshly, and so Boca will be without the centre back next week. Boca manager, Carlos Bianchi, thought his side had edged it and Newell’s manager, Gerardo Martino was left fielding questions regarding the story that he could be set to take over the now vacant Malaga job, something which he denied and remained fully focused on his Newell’s side ahead of next week.
