San Martin lost their fight for survival with defeat to River

The Torneo Final came to an end today and the only thing left to decide was who would be joining Union and Independiente in the Nacional B. Argentinos Juniors, San Martin and Atletico Rafaela were all in danger when they kicked off simultaneously this afternoon but it was the side from San Juan who failed to save themselves with a 3-1 defeat in the Estadio Monumental against River Plate. Argentinos Juniors travelled to Rosario to play the newly crowned champions, Newell’s Old Boys and came away with a 1-0 win and despite Rafaela also losing 2-1 to Velez Sarsfield, San Martin’s defeat meant that they were safe for another year. Elsewhere, Arsenal de Sarandi signed off in style with a thumping 4-0 win over All Boys, the pick of the goals being Carlos Carbonero’s thunderous strike. Later, San Lorenzo came back from 2 down to draw with Lanus in a thoroughly entertaining end to the season and Boca Juniors got the point that was needed to avoid the embarrassment of finishing the Torneo Final bottom with a 1-1 draw in Mendoza, against Boca legend, Martin Palermo’s Godoy Cruz.
