Velez Sarsfield have confirmed the capture of former star, Mauro Zarate in what signifies a considerable coup for the Liniers based club. As Facundo Ferreyra and Gino Peruzzi head in the opposite direction Velez have made a bold statement in bringing back a player with hopefully his best years ahead of him.
As has been discussed over the past few weeks it would now appear that things are now finalised. Zarate has agreed to return to his first club having previously stated that it was his preferred destination and will be playing back in Liniers for the next 2 years. Being a free agent since leaving Lazio at the end of the season bringing back Zarate proves to be a good piece of business for Velez, especially as when he left to sign for Al-Saad in 2007, it was reported to be for a fee in excess of $20 million.
With the good news of Zarate’s return Velez are also expected to say farewell to another two of their most exciting young players. Facundo ‘Chucky’ Ferreyra and Gino Peruzzi are expected to complete their moves to Shakhtar Donetsk and Sunderland. The latter now seems to have put aside some earlier contractual issues with the Wearside Premier League club.
With the money from these moves we will wait to see if Velez now make a move for Fernando Gago. After his disappointing loan move during the Torneo Final, Velez were reportedly keen to use any funds raised on making his move to Liniers permanent but will obviously face some competition for his signature.
