Newell’s Old Boys‘ title challenge got back on track yesterday in Rosario despite falling behind to Olimpo. In need of a result after their humbling by Velez last weekend, things didn’t go according to plan when Damian Musto out-jumped Gabriel Heinze to power a header into the top corner. However, it didn’t take long after the break for the champions to draw level. A trademark passing move left David Trezeguet the easiest of tap ins and with 20 minutes to go, Maxi Rodriguez was tugged in the box and then got up to slam home the penalty and ensure the 3 points. All Boys suddenly found their shooting boots as they thumped Quilmes, 4-0. Mauro Matos scored the first 3 with some instinctive finishing in the six yard box and the first hattrick of the Torneo Inicial. Gonzalo Espinoza added a wonderful fourth to seal the victory. In the final game of Saturday, San Lorenzo were unable to make their home advantage and superior play count as they were held to a goalless draw by Godoy Cruz. Perhaps missing the obvious goal scoring threat of the injured Martin Cauteruccio, San Lorenzo could not find the crucial opening. SEE ALL OF SATURDAY’S ACTION HERE….
NEWELL’S OLD BOYS 2 – 1 OLIMPO
