Maxi Rodriguez showed last night, in Avellaneda, why he is still one of the top players in Argentina as his wonderful solo effort gave Newell’s Old Boys a late winner against Racing. It was not the best performance from Torneo Final champions, Newell’s and with the game heading for a goalless draw, Maxi Rodriguez produced a moment of pure class to steal the victory. Picking the ball up on the right, the former Liverpool schemer, cut inside, beat four defenders and then shot past Sebastian Saja at his near post. A goal worthy of winning any game, keeps Newell’s top of the table for another week, meanwhile with 8 games played Racing are still without a win and are firmly rooted at the bottom. Earlier in the day, Godoy Cruz eased their relegation fears with a 2-0 win against Tigre in Mendoza. Jose Luis Fernandez gave the home side a first half lead with a superb free kick, bent over the wall and into the top corner leaving Javier Garcia no chance in the Tigre goal. Any chance of Tigre finding a way back into the game ended with in a five minute spell with 25 minutes remaining. Matias Perez Garcia and then Marcos Gelabert were both sent off, perhaps harshly leaving Tigre with 9 players. The scoreline remained the same until the 90th minute when a long punt upfield caught the tired and out of position Tigre defence at sea and Jonathan Ramis ran clear before clipping the ball over the onrushing Garcia and into the net.
