In the absence of Lionel Messi, another Argentine number 10 shone in St Louis as Sergio Aguero scored both the goals in the 2-0 win over Bosnia. In the last friendly of the year, La Albiceleste were improved from the side that drew 0-0 with Ecuador on Friday and despite not being at their electrifying best were good value for the win. What will also please Alejandro Sabella is the back-to-back clean sheets as he continues to tinker with his defence. WATCH THE GOALS….
The 4-4-2 from Friday which led to the somewhat shakey debuts of Facundo Roncoglia and Lucas Orban was replaced by a 5-3-2 made up of Pablo Zabaleta, Federico Fernández, José Basanta, the returning Nicolás Otamendi and Marcos Rojo. This was still by no means, impervious but for the first team Sabella’s side recorded consecutive clean sheets.
Argentina dominated the first half and created several chances but it took until 5 minutes before the break for Aguero to break the deadlock. The Manchester City striker pounced on a loose ball after Begovic had thwarted Rodrigo Palacio and fired it past the retreating defenders.
His first was predatory, but Aguero’s second was a superb illustration of his talent. Chasing a lofted ball over the top, Aguero did not hesitate and unleashed a wonderful left foot volley which flew past Begovic into the top corner.
Perhaps interestingly, Erik Lamela was only a substitute for the second time and so it remains unclear if this is a signal of Sabella already knowing he is part of his squad or if he is still undecided.
Either way the front four of Aguero, Higuain, Di Maria and Messi, when fit, is a terrifying prospect for defences.
