As the European Transfer window slammed shut yesterday, the biggest move so far in involving Argentine clubs saw Valencia send Ever Banega to Newell’s Old Boys on loan. The talented midfielder has struggled to show his true form for Valencia this season and has been linked with a host of top clubs in Europe as well as a return to Boca Juniors but Banega’s desire to go back to Rosario will see the Argentine international pull on the red black.
Newell’s announced on Twitter that they were “Happy to announce Ever Banega as a new player of Club Atletico Newell’s Old Boys” in what is a real coup of the previous Torneo Final winners.
The 25-year-old stated back in December when playing in a charity match with Maxi Rodriguez that he wished to represent Newell’s in the Copa Libertadores and he has now got his wish.
Banega’s talent is undoubted and he is still part of Sabella’s Argentina squad and so moves to somewhere else in Europe, with Southampton, Sunderland and Manchester United were all mentioned. It was thought that if he was going to return to Argentina then Boca Juniors would be the most likely destination given it was the club that Banega began his career before moving to Valencia.
Since then Banega has played 133 times for Los Che but at least until June 30th he will be a Newell’s player. Newell’s will pay his wages but there was no loan fee involved and although this will still be a significant investment Banega could be a key player in the forthcoming Torneo Final.
