Velez Sarsfield were crowned the first champions of the year last night with a 1-0 win over Arsenal in San Luis. Arsenal, as the Copa Argentina champions faced Superfinal champions, Velez to battle out for yet another AFA created trophy but what is in truth another pre-season friendly with a shiny cup awarded for the winners. Héctor Canteros’ second half tap in was enough for new Velez boss José Flores to celebrate his first silverware.

Lucas Pratto’s firmly struck low cross was bundled in by Canteros on the hour mark and although Arsenal came as close as humanly possible to an equaliser with a header from Diego Braghieri that struck both posts, Velez held on.

Regardless of the status of the Supercopa it is a good start of the season for Velez and with their talented squad they should be contenders for the Torneo Final.
