Without the excuse of Copa Libertadores exertions, after sending a reserve side to La Paz in midweek, Vélez Sarsfield still produced an uncharacteristically sloppy performance in defeat against Atletico Rafaela. Fabián Cubero was the guilty party as his defensive errors gifted Rafaela a two-goal advantage. His air-kick after 15 minutes enabled Diego Vera to square the ball for Lucas Albertengo to slide in the opener and just before half time, a missed header allowed Vera one-on-one with Sebastián Sosa and the scoreline was doubled. With Vélez chasing the game, two moments at either end in the space of a minute decided the match. Firstly, Vélez hit the post and then as the ball broke, Rafaela poured forward, feeding substitute, Federico González who spotted Sosa off his line and clipped the ball into the net. Lucas Pratto pulled a goal back in stoppage time but it was a missed opportunity for Vélez. WATCH THE GOALS HERE….
