After 10 years, goals from Manuel Lanzini and Ramiro Funes Mori were able to give River Plate victory in La Bombonera. A spectacular Juan Roman Riquelme free kick did level the scores midway through the second half but River came back to claim all 3 points. Any Superclásico victory is significant but the result means that River are now making a title challenge to boot. WATCH THE GOALS HERE….

It was 10 years since River Plate were last able to celebrate a victory over their rivals, Boca Juniors in La Bombonera but on Sunday afternoon Ramon Diaz’s side were able to capture a deserved victory.

Heavy rain all day created a waterlogged pitch which perhaps inhibited both sides passing, but it was River who dealt with the conditions better.

Manuel Lanzini, for the second consecutive Superclásico gave River the lead but his effort was spectacularly cancelled out by a trademark, Juan Roman Riquelme free kick. In what may be the legendary number 10’s final Superclásico appearance it was a wonderful strike which left Marcelo Barovero rooted to the spot and sent the locals into rapture.

With the form that both sides found themselves in and the significance of the match, the draw was always the most likely result, and so it appeared to be heading for. However, with just minutes of normal time remaining, a River corner was floated across and centre back, Ramiro Funes Mori rose to head past Agustín Orión.

It was a deserved victory for River Plate and although Carlos Bianchi bemoaned some of the refereeing decisions at full time, some questions need to be asked of his squad and his management.

River now find themselves just a point behind league leaders, Colón in what is a close and surprising title race. With no other distractions and the momentum of a Superclásico victory, could Ramon Diaz lead River to glory once more?

Or if you fancy, you can watch the whole game again here….
