Another midweek round and so another quick recap of what went on. There wasn’t a great deal of change at the top but perhaps a clear picture of the challengers is unfolding. Colón continue to grind out results to remain leaders but with wins for River and Vélez they are being followed closely. Racing Club remain bottom of the table despite providing the most entertaining game of the round in their 3-3 draw with Estudiantes while wins for Quilmes and Godoy Cruz make Argentinos task of avoiding relegation look steeper by the day. WATCH ALL THE GOALS….
Quilmes 1 – 0 Belgrano
A much needed win for Quilmes gifted to them by Gastón Turus’ dreadful own goal.
Olimpo 1 – 2 Vélez Sarsfield
3 points from Bahía Blanca is always a good result and with it Vélez show how capable they are of balancing the league with their Copa Libertadores commitments. Leandro Desábato headed Vélez in front and then a Dylan Gissi own goal gave them some breathing space. Facundo Cardozo was then shown a second yellow card to set up a nervy last half an hour, particularly when Ezequiel Miralles pulled a goal back but Vélez held on. One point off the lead and comfortably the league’s top scorers, Vélez could be the team to watch in this title race.
Argentinos Juniors 0 – 0 Atletico Rafaela
Leonardo Pisculichi didn’t score so Argentinos didn’t score and the result does little to help their position.
Racing Club 3 – 3 Estudiantes
An unexpected but welcome result from a game, which on paper, didn’t promise too much. Esteban Saveljich headed Racing into an early lead only for Guido Carrillo to bundle in an equaliser shortly after. Rodrigo De Paul put Racing back in front after an hour but late goals from Juan Manuel Olivera and Patricio Rodríguez looked to have given Estudiantes the away win. Another match to add to the list of Racing cock-ups was salvaged by Gastón Campi’s wonderful long range strike in the 90th minute.
Godoy Cruz 1 – 0 Lanús
Godoy Cruz’s fine Torneo Final continued in Mendoza with a narrow 1-0 win over Lanús. Mauro Obolo’s first half penalty was the match winner and although they are just 2 points off the lead, more importantly they are hovering just above the drop zone.
Rosario Central 2 – 1 Boca Juniors
Boca Juniors poor run of form continued on Wednesday night in Rosario despite taking the lead through Emanuel Gigliotti. Second half goals from Franco Niell and Alejandro Donatti gave Central victory as the pressure continues to grow on Carlos Bianchi.
Colón 1 – 0 All Boys
Lucas Landa’s late header kept the unlikeliest of title challenges going. Not the prettiest of sides, Colón have conceded only 6 goals and if they can remain this difficult to beat for the remainder of the championship they might just pull off the biggest of shocks.
River Plate 1 – 0 Newell’s Old Boys
River’s title challenge is now in full swing, as a third win on the bounce sees them just 1 point behind Colón. Carlos Carbonero’s early goal was the deciding factor against Newell’s on Wednesday. A win on Sunday against Belgrano, would be the first time since 2008 that River win 4 league matches in a row and could see them top.
Gimnasia 3 – 1 Tigre
Gimnasia came from a goal down to see off Tigre and potentially end Fabián Alegre’s spell as Tigre boss. Sergio Araujo put Tigre in front but goals from Osvaldo Barsottini, Franco Mussis and Lucas Licht cut through Tigre’s usually tight defence.
San Lorenzo 2 – 0 Arsenal
San Lorenzo announced their title challenge with this victory over Arsenal in El Nuevo Gasómetro. Julio Buffarini fired El Ciclon in front from the penalty spot and Héctor Villalba added a second with 10 minutes remaining.
