Colón were the big winners from Wednesday night’s round of fixtures as they claimed a famous victory over Newell’s Old Boys in Rosario. Lucas Alario’s second half header moved Colón back alongside Estudiantes at the top of the table, importantly put a little distance between themselves and the relegation zone and was only the third time they have done the ‘Santa Fe double’ over Newell’s and Central in the same season. The meeting of first against second, prior to the night’s matches, was between Estudiantes and River Plate in La Plata but sadly it ended goalless despite referee, Germán Delfino’s best efforts. Delfino harshly awarded a penalty after the ball had flicked up off Éder Álvarez Balanta’s hand who had been given a shove in the back by Franco Jara but River reserve keeper, Leandro Chichizola saved Guido Carrillo’s effort. The result keeps Estudiantes top with River just a point behind in the race for the title. Boca Juniors hosted San Lorenzo in one of Buenos Aires’ clásico’s but there is not much else to say. San Lorenzo ended with 9 men after Leandro Romagnoli and Néstor Ortigoza were sent off and Carlos Bianchi was forced to defend the commitment of his players after sections of the Boca fans jeered another lacklustre performance. Earlier, Rosario Central moved into championship contention with a 3-2 win over Atletico Rafaela. A Sebastián Abreu penalty and late goals from Franco Neill and Paulo Ferrari ended any hopes of a Rafaela fightback despite Lucas Albertengo and Diego Vera consolations. WATCH ALL THE GOALS….
Atletico Rafaela 2 – 3 Rosario Central
Estudiantes 0 – 0 River Plate
Newell’s Old Boys 0 – 1 Colón
Boca Juniors 0 – 0 San Lorenzo
