Banega’s thunderbolt gives Newell’s victory

Éver Banega gave a timely reminder to Argentina of his talents, following the injury to Fernando Gago, with an excellent performance capped with a superb , long-range winner for Newell’s Old Boys against Tigre in Rosario. Newell’s were certainly overdue a win in the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa so when Lucas Wilchez won a penalty for the visitors following an incredible, mazy run into the box and the impressive, Ariel Nahuelpán converted, it didn’t look good. However, the lead lasted a matter of minutes before young, Ezequiel Ponce stooped to head La Lepra level. 5 minutes later, Newell’s led and it was Banega, who drove from the halfway line before unleashing a venomous, right footed strike into the top corner, leaving Javier Garcia rooted. A much needed win for Newell’s which leaves Tigre still looking a little anxiously over their shoulders.
