Arsenal de Sarandí continue to make club history as they qualified for the Libertadores Quarter Finals for the first time with a 1-0 win in Chile against Unión Española after last week’s goalless draw in Buenos Aires. Diego Braghieri’s second half goal sets up a Quarter Final clash with Nacional of Paraguay. Joining them will be San Lorenzo, who battled to victory over Grêmio in Brazil. Outplayed over the 90 minutes, a late goal by defender Dudu forced the tie to penalties where San Lorenzo keeper, Sebastián Torrico saved twice to leave Julio Buffarini the responsibility of converting the decisive spotkick. A day earlier, Vélez Sarsfield failed to overturn their first leg defeat in Paraguay, drawing 2-2 in Liniers against Nacional. A late flurry of activity saw the tie go back and forth as Jorge Correa’s 75th minute goal would have been enough to put them through only for a penalty 2 minutes later to level the match. Correa’s excellent volley put Vélez back in front but with Nacional’s away goal, one more was needed and as the home side pushed, an injury time breakaway goal ended any hope. Arsenal and San Lorenzo join Lanús in the next round in what is turning out to be a strong year in the Libertadores for Argentine football. WATCH THE GOALS….
