Higuaín or Lavezzi? Sabella tinkers in training

Alejandro Sabella leads training this morning

Gonzalo Higuaín has now returned to full training following his ankle injury but his place in Argentina’s starting 11 against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Sunday is far from certain. Alejandro Sabella has been practicing with an eleven which has Ezequiel Lavezzi up front rather than Higuaín so the indication is that Pipita will be on the bench for the World Cup opener.

In today’s training session once again, Sabella appeared to be setting up for a 4-3-1-2 with Lionel Messi in the role just behind the strike force of Lavezzi and Sergio Agüero. The rest of the team would line up as expected with Sergio Romero in goal, a defence of Pablo Zabaleta, Federico Fernández, Ezequiel Garay and Marcos Rojo, and a midfield trio of Javier Mascherano, Fernando Gago and Ángel Di María.

Given that Higuaín is just coming back from injury perhaps it is wise to give him a little extra rest as La Selección would still be confident of having enough to see off Bosnia.

It might also be a factor that Sabella is using Higuaín in training as a sort of, Edin Dzeko copy to test the starting defence. Higuaín is certainly the most similar to the Bosnian striker and so may be useful in sharpening the tools needed to blunt the opposition attack on Sunday.
