Man United eye Benfica’s Gaitán in summer swoop

????????????????????????????????

Argentine midfielder, Nico Gaitán is a target for Manchester United this summer according to Portuguese newspaper A Bola. As United and new boss, Louis van Gaal look to shake up the squad following the failures of last season it is reported that long term target Gaitán might move to Old Trafford with Portuguese flop, Bebé moving the other way.

Gaitán has just finished a hugely successful season with Benfica as they dominated Portguese football and perhaps the 26-year-old was a little unfortunate not to be considered for the Argentine national side.

Manchester United’s interest in the players goes back several seasons and if the latest report is to be believed (it is in A Bola so maybe not) van Gaal shares the previous belief that the former Boca Juniors player could bring something to Old Trafford.

The story also suggests that United would be trying to include Bebé in the deal as they attempt to cut their losses from the £7 million they paid for the youngster back in 2010. Bebé has been on-loan in Portugal with Paços de Ferreira and had far more success than the misspent years in Manchester.

It is unlikely that Benfica would see a deal that includes Bebé knocking much off a potential fee for one of their best players. A fee for Gaitán would most likely be in excess of £15 million.

If the reported transfer funds available to van Gaal are correct this could be a drop in the ocean. At this point it would appear pure speculation and the only certainty will be the fact that Manchester United will be spending big money this transfer window.
