Confirmed: Agüero is out of the World Cup

The earlier story that Sergio Agüero would miss Tuesday’s last 16 tie against Switzerland and was sweating on further tests has now confirmed that the Manchester City striker will be ruled out for the remained of the tournament. Clarín has reported that Agüero has suffered a Grade 1 tear of his left thigh muscle and will not recover to play a part should Argentina progress.

Reports suggest that it will be 10 days before Agüero will be able to begin training again and so he could potentially be fit by the Final or at a push the Semi Final but it is highly doubtful that he would be rushed back into the side at that stage (plus Argentina would need to progress that far).

Ezequiel Lavezzi, who replaced him against Nigeria will likely be the direct replacement going forward and will remain in the same 4-3-3 system that was used in the last two matches.

A huge blow for Sergio Agüero after his injury hit season with Manchester City and also for Argentina because although he has not been at his best, if Kun had recaptured his form as the tournament went on Argentina would suddenly look far more dangerous.
