Diego Milito back training in Racing colours

Diego Milito’s return to Racing Club got off to good start as the 35-year-old striker scored twice in a 2-1 victory over Deportivo Armenio from the B Metropolitana. With a new manager in Diego Cocca and youth products, Rodrigo De Paul and Bruno Zuculini already shipped out it will be a new start for Racing in the forthcoming Torneo Transición.

Cocca’s starting eleven was: Sebastián Saja; José Luis Gómez, Esteban Saveljich, Gastón Campi, Claudio Corvalán; Diego Villar, Francisco Cerro, Luciano Aued, Gabriel Hauche; Diego Milito, Luciano Vietto.

It is promising to see Milito line up in a front two with Luciano Vietto. One of the benefits of such an experienced veteran returning to the club will be to assist in the development of the young players. Vietto could benefit from this more than anyone.

Since bursting into Racing’s starting eleven, Vietto has seen his progress slow and as Racing have failed to control matches and create chances he has dropped deeper to collect the ball. This shift will helpfully see Vietto with more support and he can learn from a striker who made a successful transition to European football.

After what has been a dismal few championships for Racing they will be hoping for an up-turn in fortune. The Torneo Transición will provide them with time to gel without contributing to their relegation average which is perhaps just as well as Racing could ill afford another disastrous campaign.
