According to Spanish radio station, Cadena COPE, Manchester City are close to finalising a deal for Malaga goalkeeper, Willy Caballero. The 32-year-old Argentine is a prized asset for the Spanish side and has a buy-out clause of €20 million and Manuel Pellegrini has maintained a close interest since they worked together.
It is understood that Pellegrini and City have tried to capture Caballero on a number of occasions and the player has resisted any move. However, even though he is contracted until 2017 a move could be imminent this summer.
The loyalty that Caballero has shown, in spite of being a top level performer in Spain and unfortunate not to feature for Argentina, may lead to the figure paid being less than the €20 million clause dicatates.
At 32, Caballero is still very much in his goalkeeping prime and with Pellegrini being such a fan it is not clear who would be number one at City next season.
Certainly paying such a fee and for such an experienced keeper who many would argue is the Argentina number one, it is unlikely Caballero would be happy sitting on the bench and simply replacing the former City backup, Costel Pantilimon.
If this deal does go through as suggested, Joe Hart’s position would come under serious threat.
