Valencia confirm Lucas Orbán will replace Barca’s Mathieu

Valencia sporting director, Francisco Rufete has confirmed that the club have agreed a deal with French club, Bordeaux for Argentine defender, Lucas Orbán. A five-year-deal has been agreed and once the medical is completed on Monday, Orbán will be officially presented.

Orbán only arrived in France last summer after impressing with Tigre in Argentina’s Primera División but his ability after 27 games in France has not gone unnoticed.

Rufete told Radio Esport, “Orban will sign for five seasons.  The fee will be paid over two years, with a release clause of €40 million.  He will undergo his medical and will be formally presented on Monday.”

It is unclear what the fee paid by Valencia is but the 25-year-old versatile defender will be a superb addition to Los Che’s defence. Orbán’s ability to play at left-back but also centrally, will draw immediate comparisons to the player who Valencia sold earlier in the window to Barcelona, Jérémy Mathieu.

Orbán is an excellent defender, who is strong in the challenge and positionally aware and will certainly offer far more than another player who was shown the exit door at the Mestalla, Aly Cissokho.

Despite being a product of River Plate’s academy, Orbán never really had much of a look-in at the Monumental and it was instead on loan at Tigre where he caught the eye. His subsequent transfer to Bordeaux saw him earn a call-up to Alejandro Sabella’s squad prior to the World Cup but he obviously missed out on the final 23.

This move to Valencia at a point in his career when Orbán should be reaching his peak might see him force a way into Tata Martino’s plans for the Copa America and World Cup 2018.
