Following Southampton’s failed bid to sign Argentina international Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon it is reported that Manchester United have tabled a £16 million bid for the 24-year-old. However, a deal is still some way off and now Liverpool may turn their attention to Rojo after becoming increasingly frustrated in their efforts to sign Alberto Moreno from Sevilla.
Rojo was undoubtedly one of the stand-out performers at this year’s World Cup and saw his reputation and, as a result, his valuation soar. However, this has not put off potential suitors and with a couple of weeks before the end of the European transfer window a battle could be about to commence for Rojo’s signature.
Reports in Portugal are now claiming that Manchester United are the second English club to make an offer to Sporting Lisbon, after Southampton’s failed attempt a week ago. Rojo would be more keen on a move to Old Trafford but the offer at present does not suit Sporting.
Manchester United have offered £9.5 million up front, with the remaining £6.5 million to be paid in instalments. However, with the Portuguese club only owning 25% of the Rojo’s economic rights they are unlikely to accept the structure of the payments.
Rojo and the investment group who own 75% are keen on the move but Sporting will want as much as possible now to invest back into their side. Having already rejected a £13 million bid from Southampton it is thought they will do the same with United’s current offer.
Rojo’s versatility to play at left back but also slot into the centre of defence makes him a very desirable player. His physical strength would make him suited to the rigours of the Premier League and while Southampton view him as a player who can cover the losses of Luke Shaw and Dejan Lovren, it is understood that Louis van Gaal would play Rojo on the left of his preferred defensive three.
Liverpool are also now expected to enter negotiations having been long-term admirers of Rojo and become frustrated with Sevilla over the sale of Alberto Moreno. A deal for the Spaniard has stalled and Rojo may now be seen as both an easier and slightly cheaper option.
Ronald Koeman and Southampton will be angered that their first-choice defensive target is now in the sights of some of England’s most powerful clubs but for Rojo and Sporting it is good news. Rojo is keen on a move to one of Europe’s top sides and Sporting are now likely to be able to get the price that they wish for such a prized asset.
