Juan Román Riquelme’s eventual exit from La Bombonera left a void in Boca Juniors and importantly a new star was needed to fill the famous number 1o shirt. This honour was bestowed upon 20-year-old enganche, Luciano Acosta after just a handful of first team appearances but it is now being reported in Argentina that Club Brugge have made an offer for the pint-sized playmaker.
Olé has reported this morning that Boca Juniors have received an offer from Club Brugge and the Belgian side may well have representatives in Córdoba to watch Acosta in his return to action for Boca’s reserves.
Brugge finished third in the Belgian Pro League last season and manager, Michel Preud’homme is keen to add some attacking talent to his side.
The offer is said to have split many of the Boca board, with manager, Carlos Bianchi loathed to lose another key player. After a terrible start to the new season with defeat at home to Newell’s Old Boys, Boca looked in much need of a creative spark and Acosta, who missed the game through injury, is hoped to be that catalyst. However, Boca are like most sides in Argentina and in need of money generated from sales to Europe. For this reason, Boca have requested 48 hours to mull over this offer.
At 20 years of age and with only 17 first team appearances, Boca have yet to see the best of Acosta, but there have been glimpses of what he might offer and handing him the number 10 shirt was an indication of the potential that Boca believe he has.
At only 5 foot 3 inches tall, Acosta manages to make Lionel Messi look lanky but his diminutive frame and low centre of gravity have so far not held him back. Like Messi, Acosta suffered from the same growing disorders and although he hasn’t developed in Barcelona’s famed La Masia, La Joya also boasts tremendous acceleration and dribbling ability.
As one may expect from an Argentine enganche, Acosta has a decent eye for goal and a fine range of passing and in spite of his physical disadvantages could develop into a top class player.
With how Boca’s season has started, unless the offer is really too good to turn down, they would be foolish to sell the youngster. A decent run this season in his preferred position would not only be advantageous to Boca but would also see his value increase.
