Sergio Romero looks set to complete a move to Liverpool according to Italian newspaper, Gazzetta Dello Sport after they revealed that negotiations have been on-going with Sampdoria. A deal for as little as €2 million could be on the verge of being agreed which would see Argentina’s World Cup hero, switch to Anfield and provide competition to Simon Mignolet.
Brendan Rodgers is thought to be an admirer of Romero and if the price of €2 million is correct then it would be a tremendous deal for Liverpool in an era of hugely inflated transfer fees.
Metro has picked up on the reports from Italy and although it was previously thought it any deal would be on loan, this latest development suggests that it could be a permanent deal.
Romero endured a difficult loan at Monaco last season where he spent much of the time on the bench, and which many thought might cost him his place as Alejandro Sabella’s number one.
This faith was fully justified as Romero went on to produce a number of excellent performances in Brazil, the highlight being the penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands in the Semi Final. The 27-year-old was named on the three-man shortlist for FIFA’s Golden Glove award.
Monaco opted not the take up their option to buy Romero after he had failed to displace Croatian, Danijel Subašić as the first choice keeper and so he returned to Sampdoria this summer.
A move to Benfica just after the World Cup appeared imminent but never materialised and so Liverpool now hope to offer Romero another option.
One thing that Romero will want to avoid is another season on the bench. Liverpool will have the added strain of the Champions League this season but at 27, Romero needs regular matches. The former Racing keeper may want some assurances from Liverpool before signing any deal.
Sampdoria may be more willing to do with business with Liverpool as they themselves are keen on Uruguayan centre back, Sebastian Coates.
