Newell’s Old Boys followed up their opening day victory in La Bombonera with a 1-1 draw against Gimnasia in the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa. A somewhat stagnant first half in which Gustavo Raggio continued the recent Newell’s tradition of possession without a great deal of creativity ended with little to note, except perhaps that Ignacio Scocco could consider himself lucky to still be on the pitch after appearing to spit on the back of Osvaldo Barsottini. It took just a minute of the second half for the game to spring into life. A cross from the right found Víctor Figueroa’s diving head and although the ball came back off the post, Maxi Rodríguez was on hand to volley the ball past Fernando Monetti. Gimnasia were level shortly after thanks to a thumping header from Barsottini and despite having Juan Quiroga sent off in injury time, they held on to a valuable point.
