Leicester City confirmed last night the signing of Esteban Cambiasso on a one-year deal in what is a significant coup for the newly promoted side. The 34-year-old was a free agent since leaving Inter Milan at the end of last season, after 10 years at the Giuseppe Meazza but arrives in Leicester with one of the best CVs in world football. With 23 titles to his name from River Plate, Real Madrid and Inter, Cambiasso is tied with the great Alfredo Di Stéfano as the most decorated Argentine in history.

Cambiasso has been a corner-stone of the Inter Milan side since moving to Italy in 2004 from Real Madrid. Since then he has made over 300 appearances and was integral to the treble-winning side of 2010 under Jose Mourinho.

Inter suffered one of their worst campaigns in recent memory last season and so the 34-year-old was shown the exit door, along with fellow Argentine veterans, Javier Zanetti, Walter Samuel and Diego Milito.

Several clubs have been linked to Cambiasso over the past weeks, including Tottenham, Valencia and a return to River Plate. However, it is Leicester City who have managed to complete a deal that they have been working on for a lengthy period of time.

He is going to wear the number 19 shirt for Leicester and is available to make his debut this weekend as The Foxes face Arsenal.

Despite his age, Cambiasso is still a valuable defensive midfielder. Quick in the tackle but with the technical ability to retain possession and link up the attack. These talents brought 52 appearances for Argentina and perhaps most memorably Cambiasso was the scorer of one of the greatest goals in World Cup history, as he finished the outstanding passing move that cut Serbia and Montenegro to pieces in 2006.

This weekend might come too soon for Cambiasso but his experience may prove invaluable in Leicester’s efforts to avoid relegation. Who knows perhaps with a decent cup run, Cambiasso might even add to his medal collection.
