Sunday’s fixtures undoubtedly dominate this weekend’s Argentine football but on Saturday there were also wins for Newell’s Old Boys, Rosario Central and Gimnasia. Newell’s moved up to second in the table with a 1-0 win over Estudiantes in the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa. Víctor Figueroa’s smart break had the visitors backtracking and his pass to the overlapping Mauricio Tévez was finished emphatically as the youngster drilled in his second goal of the season. Earlier, Rosario Central picked up a good away win over Defensa y Justicia. Second half goals from Walter Acuña, Franco Neill and Antonio Medina rendered Washington Camacho’s strike nothing more than a consolation. In La Plata, goals from Jorge Rojas and Javier Mendoza either side of half time gave Gimnasia a deserved win over Godoy Cruz.
