San Lorenzo announced yesterday that their new stadium will be named the Estadio Papa Francisco, after their most famous supporter. Much of El Ciclón’s recent success has jokingly been atributed to the divine assistance of Pope Francis but either way it is a good time for the fans. Following the club’s first Copa Libertadores triumph, this historic return to Boedo is the cause of real celebration.

The Buenos Aires neighbourhood of Boedo is the spiritual home of San Lorenzo where they played in the original Gasómetro since 1916. However, during the military dictatorship, the club were forced to sell the land and so they have been playing in the Nuevo Gasómetro in Bajo Flores.

The fans, for obvious reasons have still always considered Boedo home and so the news that they are able to purchase the original land back from supermarket, Carrefour is hugely significant.

The plans for the stadium have been released and although it will be smaller than the 75,000 Viejo Gasómetro, it is back where it belongs.

The Estadio Papa Francisco is due to be ready in 2016. However, based on usual Argentine construction speed this may prove to be optimistic.
