Estudiantes legend, Juan Sebastián Verón has been named the club’s new President after winning the election with more than 70% of the vote. Verón achieved everything as a player with the club and now begins a new era leading them to further glory.
Given La Brujita’s status within the club his victory by such a margin comes as little surprise and it will be an interesting time now for Estudiantes and also within AFA, as the newest club President knows more than anyone about the footballing side of running a club.
More than 7,000 members voted in the election and although the official figures have not been released, Verón is said to have gained more than 70% of those votes.
Although Verón’s career took him all over Europe, notably in Italy but also to Manchester United and Chelsea, he always remained a firm favourite with supporters of Estudiantes. His father, too, was a club legend but in a career spanning 20 years and now as President, La Brujita surely surpasses even the exploits of the original Bruja.
A Nacional B title in 1995 as a youngster was his first taste of glory with Estudiantes but after a highly successful career in Europe, where he became one of the most expensive players in history, he returned to La Plata.
The Apertura titles in 2006 and 2010 were highlights but leading the side to the Copa Libertadores in 2009 was a pinnacle in Verón’s glittering career.
The club know that in Verón they have a President who will only want the very best for the club and who will hope that he can lead them into an even more successful era.
