Talented youngster, Joaquín Correa’s absolute thunderbolt set Estudiantes de La Plata en route to a closely fought 2-1 win over Uruguayans, Peñarol in the first leg of their Copa Sudamericana Quarter Final clash. In front of new President, Juan Sebastián Verón, the 20-year-old midfielder cut inside and unleashed an unstoppable shot from 35 yards to give the home side the lead. Fabián Estoyanoff equalised for Peñarol with a fiercely struck shot from distance of his own but in the last minute of stoppage time Guido Carrillo slotted in the winner from the penalty spot. Later in Paraguay, Cerro Porteño ensured that they will take a one-goal lead to Lanús thanks to Óscar Romero’s quick-fire brace just after the hour mark. Santiago Silva scored a crucial away goal but there is plenty of work to do in the second leg.

Estudiantes  2 – 1  Peñarol

Cerro Porteño  2 – 1  Lanús
