An embarrassing cup exit at the hands of lower league opposition was very much on the cards for Argentinos Juniors last night, but a superb, late Juan Román Riquelme penalty spared their blushes before the 36-year-old talisman fired in the winning spotkick in the shootout. Estudiantes de Buenos Aires, from the Metropolitana B, were minutes away from victory after Sergio Sosa’s second half goal but in the 88th minute Riquelme nonchalantly chipped in from the spot. The match went to penalties and when Diego Torres saw his effort smash off the crossbar, Riquelme kept his cool to stroke in the decisive spotkick.
