Arsenal and Liverpool are both keeping an eye on Gonzalo Higuaín’s position at Napoli amid reports that the striker is unsettled with the Italian sides current struggles. There have already been suggestions that Liverpool have offered £31.2 million ahead of a potential January switch although the players brother says any unrest and potential move away from Naples is just gossip.
With Napoli’s early exit from the Champions League and poor showing in Serie A, sources in Italy have suggested that Higuaín is seeking a move away from the Stadio San Paolo.
Coupled with the club’s financial loss from the lack of Champions League football it is understood that Napoli might be prepared to listen to offers for the 26-year-old as he represents probably the greatest asset.
Perhaps further stretching the rumour is that two clubs previously linked with Higuaín might be back in the market for a striker. Arsenal were said to be in talks with the player before his move to Napoli and Liverpool are still adapting to life after losing Luis Suarez. Mario Balotelli has so far not repaid his transfer fee and Brendan Rodgers might be tempted back into the market for an established world-class striker.
Any reports of a £31.2 million bid already from Liverpool would appear premature but might tempt Napoli, if indeed this is confirmed.
However, Federico Higuaín, the brother of Gonzalo and striker for MLS side, Columbus Crew insists his brother has no intention of leaving Napoli anytime soon.
“I have read and heard different things about my brother, but none of these things correspond to reality. People have spoken of the disappointment of not qualifying for the Champions League, and that this has caused resentment from Gonzalo.”
“Nothing could be further from the truth. When I speak to my brother he is calm, and happy to wear the shirt of Napoli. His future is still with the Partenopei.”
