After last week’s victory in Asunción and given River’s formidable home record it was little surprise to see Marcelo Gallardo’s side breeze into the Copa Sudamericana Quarter Final. Libertad made life even more difficult for themselves early on when Antonio Bareiro was sent off for an elbow on Ariel Rojas and it allowed River to dominate. Goals just before the end of both halves from Gabriel Mercado and Gio Simeone stetched River’s unbeaten run to 27 matches. Earlier in Montevideo, Estudiantes did not have things so easy. Gonzalo Viera’s early header meant that Peñarol took an early lead in the tie on away goals and when Jonathan Rodríguez smashed in a second in first half stoppage time things looked bleak. However, Guido Carrillo’s superbly struck, long range effort with 20 minutes remaining levelled the tie. As the match went to penalties it was left to Estudiantes keeper, Hilario Navarro to be the hero, as he saved three spotkicks to set up the all-Argentine Quarter Final against River.
Peñarol 2 – 1 Estudiantes (Agg 3-3 Estudiantes won 3-1 on penalties)
