Tottenham could make January move for River striker, Teo Gutiérrez

River Plate may well be on the brink of a historic season with a 29-match unbeaten run and good chances of lifting both the Primera title and Copa Sudamericana but Los Millonarios could have a fight on their hands to hold onto Colombian striker, Teo Gutiérrez. The 29-year-old has been in prolific form since returning to River after representing Colombia in Brazil and currently leads the scoring charts in Argentina. Interest is therefore inevitable and while Sevilla and Southampton have previously been registered with an interest, Tottenham have now reportedly joined the chase as Mauricio Pochettino looks to bolster his failing strike force.

The Argentine manager of Spurs has seen his side struggle this season and the failures of both Emanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado have been a significant factor in Tottenham’s plight. With this in mind, Pochettino has earmarked a number of strikers for January and Teo Gutierrez is understood to be on that list.

Given River Plate’s financial difficulties it is thought that a fee around £6 million would be enough to prize Teo away from the Monumental which by current Premier League amounts is a small amount. At 29, this may well be the last opportunity for Gutiérrez to test himself in Europe. The striker had a brief spell in Turkey with Trabzonspor in 2010 but returned to Argentina before playing for a while in México.

River, of course, will have the added commitment of Copa Libertadores next year and for this reason may hope to retain Gutiérrez as one of the only senior strikers in the squad. The player himself has spoken of his desire to play in the prestigious tournament but a concrete offer of Premier League football may well change matters.

If the price was right, River might think it is a good time to cash in on Teo. After what could be a hugely successful season and at 29 years of age, River will never see the price as high and with Rodrigo Mora in equally good form and a host of talented youngsters coming through perhaps Marcelo Gallardo could cope.

Given decent service, Gutiérrez could score goals as he is a predatory finisher but moments of madness have always plagued his career. This part of his character may have held back his career in the past, whether or not teams in Europe are still cautious of signing Gutiérrez remains to be seen. Whether it is Spurs or not, River will receive some calls over the player in January.
