Days after announcing that he has been given the all clear after his cancer treatment, Jonás Gutiérrez was back training with Vélez Sarfield this morning. The Liniers based club, where Jonás began his career tweeted a picture of the former Argentina international working with the first team squad.

Gutiérrez mentioned that he was ready to return to Newcastle but a great deal of uncertainty surrounds this given that the Premier League side had already told the 31-year-old that we needed to find a new club. Despite his popularity with the supporters at Newcastle it appears unlikely that he will play again.

Quizzed over whether he may return to play in Argentina, Jonás said: “There are many factors for me to return. But having played in all the youth sides and leaving, I can’t see myself playing for a team other than Vélez.”

Training again with Vélez is just a small step before a competitive return and Gutiérrez acknowledged this but after his health battle it would be wonderful to see El Galgo back playing.
