Independiente’s slim title hopes may have been extinguished last night in the Estadio Libertadores de América as Lucas Licht’s wonderfully taken goal gave Gimnasia a 1-0 victory. If results go against El Rojo on Sunday, Jorge Almirón’s side could find themselves 8 points adrift of River. Earlier on Saturday, Godoy Cruz proved just why they are the side to watch in Argentina’s top flight, as the league’s most porous defence continue to leak goals but their attack manage to keep the balance. Yesterday in Santa Fe, despite conceding another 3 goals, Godoy Cruz came out on top with a late winner earning them a 4-3 win. Olimpo earned themselves a much needed win with victory over fellow strugglers Quilmes and Belgrano swept aside Defensa y Justicia 3-0 in a match that was marred by the news that a Belgrano fan died after falling from the top tier of the stand.
Atlético Rafaela 3 – 4 Godoy Cruz
Godoy Cruz’s defence certainly make their forwards work and Saturday proved no different as both sides in Santa Fe exhibited the kind of defending that creates plenty of goals. Jaime Ayovi gave the visitors the lead after just 8 minutes but predictably they could only hold this lead for about 15 minutes as Walter Serrano flicked in an equaliser. Rubén Ramiréz headed Godoy Cruz back in front shortly after before Ayovi found himself in acres of space once more to smash them two clear. A five minute spell after half time saw La Crema level, first Federico González curled in from outside the box and soon after Nicolás Orsini tapped in the equaliser. With the game heading for a draw, Leandro Fernández volleyed in a spectacular winner for Los Mendocinos. Having conceded two or more goals in the last nine matches and actually having an attack only bettered by River Plate, one can’t help but think where Godoy Cruz might be if they could just cut out the dreadful defending.
Olimpo 2 – 1 Quilmes
Even in Bahía Blanca, Olimpo have found things hard going in the Primera this season, thankfully in Quilmes, they were playing a side yet to win away from home and finding wins even harder to come by. Adrián Martínez’s excellent left footed shot from outside the box put Olimpo in front and when Mauricio Cuero thundered in a first half stoppage time golazo from 30 yards a third win of the season looked on the cards. Adrian Fernandez headed one back with 10 minutes remaining to set up an uncomfortable ending for the home side but they held on for a much needed win.
Belgrano 3 – 0 Defensa y Justicia
Belgrano produced their best performance of the season with a commanding performance to defeat Defensa y Justicia in Córdoba. A superbly worked team goal was eventually volleyed in by Lucas Zelarrayán and minutes later Julio Furch doubled the advantage. Jerry Bengtson added a late third but Belgrano’s joy over registering such a convincing home win was overshadowed by the news that a 22-year-old supporter had fallen to his death during the match.
Independiente 0 – 1 Gimnasia
Independiente were in need of a win if they were to keep any kind of pressure on River Plate at the top but El Rojo were unable to produce anywhere near the level of creativity that they have been this season against a resolute and disciplined Gimnasia side. Neither side carved out too many clear opportunities but Gimnasia full back, Lucas Licht produced the only moment of genuine quality to win the match. Breaking forward characteristically, the left back played a neat one-two before volleying the ball past Diego Rodríguez for a rare away win.
