According to reports Arsenal are interested in Boca Juniors 21-year-old attacker, Jonathan Calleri ahead of a possible January deal. The former All Boys striker has been in good form for Boca since making the big move at the start of the Torneo Transición and helped them to the Copa Sudamericana Semi Finals. With five goals this season, Arsène Wenger and his scouts may have seen enough to capture Calleri and then send him out on loan, similar to the signing of Costa Rican, Joel Campbell.

Calleri is a good finisher but the comparisons with Gonzalo Higuaín that have surfaced in the UK press are a little wide of the mark. While Higuaín is much more a typical number 9, Calleri often features in the wider positions of Boca’s front three and certainly contributes far more to their attack than just a central goal threat.

After impressing for All Boys, despite their relegation at the end of the 2014 season, Carlos Bianchi and Boca swooped for the youngster and brought him to La Bombonera for the current league season for around $300,000.

Bianchi struggled to find a system for his new signings and it was not until the legendary coach was replaced by the younger and more forward thinking Rodolfo Arruabarrena that Boca saw the best of Calleri. Since then he has established himself as a regular in the Boca attack and scored five goals along the way.

One of these was the crucial away goal in Paraguay against Deportivo Capiatá in the last 16 of the Copa Sudamericana. The goal took the tie to penalties and Boca progressed and they now find themselves pitched against rivals, River Plate for a place in the Final. The first leg in La Bombonera is tonight and Calleri is expected to start in the biggest game of the season.

Certainly a move to England would be premature at this stage of his career but at 21 perhaps Arsenal want to safeguard against any other teams tempting Boca. A move on loan somewhere would undoubtedly follow but even with this type of deal, the signing of Calleri seems a little unlikely.
