OFC Champions League champions and New Zealand’s title holders, Auckland City continued their remarkable run at the Club World Cup earlier with a 1-0 win over Algerian side, ES Setif earlier today. John Irving’s second half goal was enough to seal a famous victory for the part-timers as they will now face Copa Libertadores champions, San Lorenzo on Wednesday for a place in the Final.
If the fact that Auckland City reaching the Semi Final was not a good enough story, among their ranks is 26-year-old, Argentine striker, Emiliano Tade. The Santiago del Estero born player moved to New Zealand to study law and now finds himself up against fellow countrymen, San Lorenzo.
Tade set up Irving’s winning strike and after the match told reporters: “I couldn’t imagine this, it was unthinkable to play against San Lorenzo. What we have achieved is something huge.”
Despite not playing in Argentina, Tade obviously has many friends back home in Argenina, some of which are San Lorenzo supporters, so he joked, “They told me that they would kill me if I did something against Los Cuervos.”
Auckland City face San Lorenzo on Wednesday with the winners to take on either Real Madrid or Cruz Azul for the trophy.
