Liverpool might be set to increase the Argentine representation in the Premier League further with reported moves for Napoli striker, Gonzalo Higuaín and Sampdoria goalkeeper, Sergio Romero. Several UK newspapers are suggesting that Brendan Rodgers’ side are negotiating a £30 million deal for the Argentina number nine and the move could spark a chain of transfer deals which would also see compatriot, Romero join Higuaín at Anfield.
It would be fair to say that Mario Balotelli’s time at Liverpool has thus far been far from successful as the man tasked with replacing the void left by the departure of Luís Suarez and the injury to Daniel Sturridge has not managed a single Premier League goal this season. In spite of this failure, the talented striker has still attracted interest from Italian side Sampdoria, who themselves are looking to replace the recently departed Manolo Gabbiadini.
The 23-year-old Italian completed a move to Napoli which in turn has created the speculation linking Higuaín with a move away from the Stadio San Paolo.
Sampdoria’s attempts to sign Balotelli might be made easier by including Argentina’s penalty hero, Sergio Romero in the deal as Liverpool seek a replacement for goalkeeper, Simon Mignolet. The 27-year-old goalkeeper has just six months remaining on his current deal with Sampdoria and so they may prefer to use him as a make-weight in January rather than lose him for nothing in the summer.
If Balotelli were to leave, and even if he remained, Liverpool would be looking to refresh their attack as their dependence on Daniel Sturridge has been apparent in his absence. Their interest in Higuaín has been long-standing and now with questions over his future in Naples, the rumours have resurfaced.
The 27-year-old centre forward has scored goals everywhere he has played and Liverpool would be confident that the former Real Madrid player could replicate his form in the Premier League. A natural goal scorer would certainly boost Rodger’s hopes of a top four finish but it remains to be seen whether the club will sanction such a hefty transfer fee in January.
January is of course a month of unsubstantiated rumour and gossip but it goes without saying that both players could offer Liverpool a great deal.
