There was no sign of Independiente’s new signings, Lucas Albertengo or Emiliano Papa but Jorge Almirón’s side had enough to see off Estudiantes in Mar del Plata in the first match of the summer tournaments. After a close first half in which Estudiantes had the better chances, El Rojo returned after the break, the more incisive. Juan Martín Lucero slid in the only goal of the match following a fast break from midfield led by captain, Federico Mancuello. River Plate are the third team in this ‘Copa de Oro’ and they play Estudiantes on Sunday, before meeting Independiente next Tuesday.
