Icardi’s fan spat earns him a fine but it could spell the end at Inter

Mauro Icardi made headlines for all the wrong reasons once again on Sunday and his latest misdemeanor could cost him dearly with Inter Milan. Roberto Mancini might have brushed the incident under the table and the fine issues to Icardi is unlikely to trouble him much but there is now talk that Inter will look to cash-in on the 21-year-old at the end of the season.

Following Inter’s 3-1 defeat to Sassuolo on Sunday, Icardi threw his shirt to the travelling away fans but when they returned this to him, the young striker reacted badly. Icardi and Colombian team mate, Fredy Guarin were seen arguing with supporters and Icardi was quoted as calling the group of Inter fans, “Pieces of shit.”

Icardi scored Inter’s only goal and is the club’s leading scorer in a disappointing season that sees Mancini’s side in thirteenth position in Serie A. Mancini, at least publically, tried to defuse the situation, telling reporters in the post-match press conference.

“Icardi made a mistake because we need to accept criticism. I told him he shouldn’t have gone to the stands because it was only to be expected that the fans would be angry.

“Having said that the Inter fans have always stuck with the team and I’m sure they’ll continue to do so.”

The Inter fans may well stick by their number nine but reports in Italy are suggesting that the club are unwilling to do so and could cash-in on their biggest asset.

Icardi has been fined for the outburst but they are already suggesting that Inter are lining up replacements for the Argentine. There has been plenty of interest in the 21-year-old and if the Nerazzurri can get in the region of €30 million then they might be willing to do business.

Chelsea and Liverpool have both been linked with Icardi in the past and might take another look in the summer if he is indeed available but it is another regrettable moment in his fledgling career. With all the talent in the world, it is already clear that his personal issues have not impressed Argentina coach, Gerardo Martino and have held him back from any further call-ups.

In spite of his obvious talent, Inter are looking at Ezequiel Lavezzi, André-Pierre Gignac, Stefano Okaka and Andrea Belotti as possible replacements.
