A week ago, River were deserved 1-0 winners over San Lorenzo in the Monumental and last night in the Nuevo Gasómetro it was the same result. Over the 180 minutes, River were far superior to the Copa Libertadores champions, San Lorenzo and although it was only a Carlos Sánchez goal that separated the sides few could argue with River lifting the Recopa trophy.

The humiliating loss to Boca in the summer superclásico made it a slightly uncomfortable preseason for River but Marcelo Gallardo’s side have quickly put that behind them and look ahead to a positive 2015. The fact that they have managed to keep together their squad from last year is the best news for River and holds them in good stead for the upcoming championship.

San Lorenzo did have chances last night but each time they found a route to goal it was blocked by the superb Marcelo Barovero. As the game drew to an end each side saw red cards as first Ramiro Funes-Mori and then Julio Buffarini were ordered from the pitch but by that stage the match was over.

Another trophy for Gallardo in his fledgling career as River manager but this year provides the sternest of tests as they must compete both domestically and for the ultimate prize – the Copa Libertadores.

San Lorenzo  0 – 1  River Plate (AGG 0 – 2)
